About

The mission

Forecast Iowa is the definitive portal for the Hawkeye State's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean, and highway-clear for all 99 counties, from the Loess Hills above the Missouri to the Driftless bluffs above the Mississippi.

Iowa is the only state bounded on both sides by navigable rivers, and between them it is as flat, as open and as completely exposed as ground gets in North America. Nothing here is moderated: the derecho that crossed the state in fourteen hours in August 2020 kept 140-mph winds all the way to Cedar Rapids, the blizzard that closes I-35 does it with snow that fell the day before, and a July corn canopy puts more water into the air than the Gulf does. That is a state that deserves its own forecast site, and eleven of them underneath it.

The design language

Metro & region sites

Iowa is covered close-up by 11 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastiowa.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast Iowa, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

Every one of Iowa's neighbors is live: Forecast Minnesota across the north line, Forecast Wisconsin and Forecast Illinois down the Mississippi, Forecast Missouri along the southern line, and Forecast Nebraska across the Missouri and Forecast Dakotas up the Big Sioux — each tinted in its own accent on the hero map and clickable across the border. The rest of the Forecast <State> network is part of the same system.
